This is a great little unit, with superb sound quality for the size. The battery life is amazing and the time ton recharge (from USB port) can't be beaten. The earphones are of good quality (although jumping on the ipod bandwagon being white!) with great bass and tone. Once you get used to the controls, it is extremely easy to navigate around and you can find most features relatively quickly. This is perfect for the gym due to it's size and weight. On the other side, sadly I have to say after owning Sony Mp3's for many years now that I regret the day I ever chose Sony. This is all down to the terrible Sonicstage software. Yes it is easy to use, but it limits you to Sony hardware for the rest of your life (unless you want to reload hundreds of Cd's onto your computer) and sadly ever since I loaded the version of sonicstage that came with this MP3 onto my computer it has made all newly recorded albums skip and jump and it no longer allows me to transfer previously loaded albums onto my new MP3! Frustrating in the extreme. So overall, great MP3 player, terrible software.
An excellent MP3 player for the money! - 06 Sep 2007

Firstly, I was worried when I read earlier reviews that stated the process of getting mp3's onto the device was a pain, eg. awkward software etc. NOT TRUE! The software supplied (Sony SonicStage) is really simple to use. Import music from a CD, URL (File - Import, then past the web link into the filename box) eg. Radio 5 Live podcasts or individual files. Transferring is a piece of cake. Updated version of software available from the Sony website. It's a basic player, I'm not disputing that, but for less than £30, what do you want?! It's 'only' 512MB, but that is plenty for listening to podcasts and other bits and bobs in the car during the daily 1 hour motorway commute to work.
Good sound quality, but the supplied earphones are ones just to get you started. Already had a pair of Sony Fontopia ear phones (£20 or so) - highly recommended, if you want them to stay in your ears, give good bass sound and also block out most of the outside noise.
Simple to use buttons - play/stop, forward, backward, volume up and down, and one button that toggles between going forward (or back) by track or by folder/album (when you press to forward and backward button). There is also a 'hold' switch which will disable key presses.
Sleek design with a polished black/silvery look that just looks great.
The bad points:
There is no option to fast-forward through a track, as in if I listen to a 60 minute podcast and I accidentally hit the forward button for the next track, you have to listen to it all again in real time to get back to where you left off. Just a minor irritation. Now I use the 'hold' switch a lot! Needless to say, if you press stop mid-way through a track, it'll pick up from where you stopped it the next time you start.
When using the AUX socket in my car, the volume has to be cranked up on the MP3 player to max and also fairly high on the stereo too. It could just be the car stereo not amplifying enough on that input, but make sure you have the traffic alerts turned off as when they cut in, it really makes you jump!!!
This is my first ever MP3 player and am having a very positive experience with it. I only decided to write this review to stop others (who are just after a decent entry level player) being dissuaded by previous reviewers. Ultimately, like most things in life, you get what you pay for. But, this player is well worth the money you pay for it.
TOOOO QUIET! - 21 Aug 2007

I bought this for the gym and its a great size for running - small enough to pop in your pocket and go. It looks good, the sound quality is great and its easy to use and navigate. I personally like the sony software that it comes with. However, the major letdown with this is that it is just too quiet for use in the gym. even when its turned up to max, with in ear earphones, you can still hear background noise and the gym music
God value for money - 03 Aug 2007

I bought this on behalf of a friend following my recommendation of the more expensive Sony NWS705. Shop around, as Argos have offloaded these at £20 to make way for new stock with larger memory.
If you pay anything under £30 you can't go wrong. The volume levels are slightly lower than the NWS705, but quieter recordings can be boosted in the Advanced Settings which allow you to normalise high and low recording volumes. This causes a slight feeling of compression when listening, but they've handled it much better than I thought such a feature could give.
The headphones are a bit of a disappointment. They sit on the outer part of the ear, but I've listened using a better pair of Sennheiser "Ear Canal" phones and the sound is far improved, with punchy bass and a much more intense sound. Perhaps the earphones are the place that cost savings have been realised to bring the price down, so add £20 to the cost for a decent pair of headphones if you want to get the best results out of this.
The unit plugs directly into your PC's USB port, with a dust cover to protect the socket. This is better than other models which require a lead between the two. The buttons are sturdy, and I feel it is well made. You'll have no complaints with this one.
Very Pleased - 21 Jul 2007

I liked this player - it's battery life is pretty amazing and it is miles better than my old ipod, which i've had replaced 3 times and has gone wrong AGAIN...I find it simple to use and good sound.
I can see what the others mean about the software - it's not the best, I found itunes better or even windows media player, but to be honest i don't find it quite as bad as everyone else. it installed quickly, works without glitch I just find it annoying that I can't use my itunes because that's what I'm used to. and actually, the connect store is pretty good if anyone's tried it, you can find just as many songs on there as on itunes music store, and you can actually download foreign tracks (which itunes wont let you do unless you have a foreign address, and then you have to open up a whole new account.
All in all, pretty impressed.
