5 Reviews for Sony NWA3000B 20 GB HDD Walkman - Black

Superb machine, poor software - 28 Aug 2007

I have had this player for some time now, bought on the back of the good name of Sony. I am nowhere near filling its huge 20gig memory which is a plus. Sound quality is excellent, far superior to the ipod, however I am using a better quality set of earphones to the ones supplied. Its easy to use, shuffle mode means you dont need to touch anything to hear continuous music once you get going. Slight downside, its difficult to see the display in strong daylight but you get used to it.
Its only downfall is the awfull Connect software. It is so slow and often failed to recognise that the player was connected to my pc. I am pleased to say that the upgrade to Sonic Stage software has resolved the problems and is easy to use. I looked at a few makes before deciding on the Sony and have been very happy with it and definately made the right decision. Well done Sony but get the software right next time!

Great device - 02 Dec 2006

Well, the gods of computing have smiled upon me. Had mine for several months now, and had absolutely no problems at all, and yes, I'm using Connect.
But as we all know, anything can go wrong, any time, for absolutely no reason at all. So it goes.
I updated the software & firmware, got rid of the dreadful volume limitation, and set the EQ just how I like it. The sound quality is excellent, build solid, and the design lovely. Sound quality and battery life are important to me, & that's why I chose this over an iPod.
My heart goes out to those reviewers below who relate horror stories regarding software, but I've been lucky enough to have Connect behave itself impeccably (so far).
It sounds fantastic through my HiFi too.
Yes, it's a little bulky, but 20G of storage means I can carry everything I want with me.
Yes, the screens impossible to read in bright sunlight.
Also, some of the functions, such as song selection by year aren't useful.
Overall I'm more than happy. It's revolutionized the way I listen to music & got me into pod casts.
I suppose it's a lottery, but if it works how it's supposed to, this is a great device.

Nice player, so long as you have patience - 13 Aug 2006

This is a nice piece of hardware, let down by the software. The supplied CONNECT Player is appalling but (once updated over the internet) does successfully perform the very basic task of uploading music to the player, given enough patience.

Sony have released a new version of their older SonicStage software which supposedly supports this device better, but many have found it makes the walkman slow down - it took 4 or 5 seconds to respond to button presses after I synced with it via it. The solution (believe it or not) is to use Windows to 'defragment' the drive device presented by the player over USB (SonicStage must fragment the index file, unlike CONNECT Player).

Unfortunately I found that SonicStage continually uploads about 300 tracks every time it syncs, even though they are already on the player. So I am going to have to use the awful CONNECT Player software again (not that SonicStage is much better anyway).

I think it's shocking that Sony can sell this without proper software, but they obviously don't care. Unless you're happy messing about with technical stuff then I'd recommend an ipod instead - even though I love the hardware itself (thus 4 stars).

What a disapointment! - 12 Aug 2006

I bought one of these even though there was a mix of good and bad reviews about it. The first one i got didn't work at all and the software crashed my computed completely.

I decided to return it for a replacment.

The second one arrived and it worked for two weeks, but over that period the length of time taken for the software to dectect the Mp3 player became longer and longer until it was up to an hour! The most shocking and frustrating thing though, is that if you plug your player in and it isn't fully read by the software - you cant listen to the songs already on it!

The piece of kit is actually really great...when it works. But the software is so awful that it outweighs any pros the kit has to offer. DO NOT BUY ONE!

Brilliant !!!! - 09 Aug 2006

This item is a top class piece of kit, in fact it is so good I recommended it to my 24 year old nephew who is equally impressed with his.

I previously had the Vaio hard disc player, which was a classy piece of kit but battery life was nowhere near as good as this player, and it was considerably more bulky.

The software does let it down but if you can live with the nuances then its not so bad. I am a veteran of Sonic Stage, having struggled with it since the early days. To me now it just has minor annoyances like trying to insist you delete all the music downloaded off another computer when trying to add music from another computer. How silly is that ? Anyway I just ignore the message and it does the download anyway and does not destroy what is already in the unit.

But for those struggling with Sonic Stage, I believe you can double click on the NWA3000 icon in "My Computer" and drag and drop your MP3 files to the relevant folder ?

Regarding MP3 ID tags, I use Audio Tags Editor which uses Gracenote to fill out missing info. in MP3 files, easy peasy.

The low volume is not really Sonys fault but due to an EU member state (France I think) who require lower volumes to protect the ears of their citizens. So the model of the player sold in the EU has a volume limit. This can be easily removed, just search for "NWA3000 volume hack" or similar in Google.

To get this best audio out of this unit then you might want to consider Ultimate Ears Super.Fi 5Pro Earphones. Very expensive but can be bought cheaper, less than £100, from US based sellers on Ebay. Ulitmate Ears make the high end earphones used by professional musicians, go to http://www.ultimateears.com/superfi/artists__static__file-artists.html and check out their client list !!

See my review of the black version of these for my impressions of these earphones.
