Very pleased... - 04 Nov 2007

My previous experience using sat nav was with the Garmin Nuvi 300 and C510D, both excellent units.
I think the Sony is considerably better, whats good:
(a)The suction cup dashboard/screen mount deserves an award on its own.
(b) That screen ...the best of the bunch, maps are superb widescreen.
(c) The on screen icons..considerably better than the others, you get a direction icon, plus another above it if there are quick turns, as you approach a turn, you get a verbal que, an on screen graphic plus a scrolling bar that shrinks as you approach the turn it helps avoid confusion at big junctions. On Motorways etc another icon appears top of screen mimicing the motorway signs you should be following...excellent.
(d) Animations - maps shrink and expand also the main display changes in scale in sympathy with your speed.
(e) its fairly intuitive, but do read the handbook..it has its quirks
(f) it has all the features of the competition but you need to read the hand book supplied on disc to make sense of it all.
Whats bad...
(a ) a faster processor please. the display on data entry and some maps can be sluggish but its a minor quirk.
(b) it is sensitve to 'spaces' when inputting data, postcodes etc if you leave then out it can get confused..
All in all the best out there.....I love it
Also its TMC it seems to work the icon flashes but i have not subscribed. TMC is like RDS on radios, the info is carried on a data subcarrier (DSB/SC) but only on the VHF FM Classic FM service, the unit will auto tune in.
Postcode entry panic over! - 30 Oct 2007

As soon as I got my new device out the box, I entered a destination using a postcode. As I entered "MK" for a Milton Keynes/Bedford postcode, I was being offered a choice of two destinations which had the letters "MK" in their name - CROMKILL and DRUMKEEN! I tried several other postcodes including "CF" for Cardiff a similar thing happened. However other postcodes were working fine e.g. "KT" etc.
Ready to send the product back, I had the thought to hit the "BACK" button - and simply carrying on with entering the remainder of the postcode AND IT WORKED! Huge relief.
Since working out how to enter postcodes, I've been testing the product more fully, downloaded speed camera information and subscribed to the "premium" TMC service.
I'm happy with my new purchase and would have given it five stars had it not been for the very limited instructions that come with the product.
Stay away from this im serious - 25 Oct 2007

I bought this yesterday and i returned it this morning thats how crap it is.
It comes with a big screen with lots of information on the interface, however the main problem is reception.
i live in a normal residential area where there are a few trees here and there which should not affect the gps. however this nav takes about an hour just to get reception.
so if your on a journey leave the house and sit in your car an hour early to get reception then leave.
and the worst thing of it is that if you update the maps with the speed camera info from the website, youl be sure to scratch your head as to how you have to activate it. why doesnt it come loaded with it i mean its 250 quid come-on!
And Finally the worst part about it is that text entry is slow to load, you could drive to your destination quciker than you can enter the info.
IM WRITING THIS BEACUSE I AM EXTREMELY ANGRY AT THE FACT THAT SONY HAVE A NASTY HABIT OF MAKING SHODDY FIRMWARE WHICH ALWAYS FAILS.
BUT THE WORST OF IT ALL IS WHEN YOU UPDATE THE SYSTEM IT COMPLETELY AND I MEAN COMPLETELY FAILS, IT DOES NOT REACH ANY SATELLITE AT ALL AND THEREFORE IS RENDERED A BRICK.
Thank you.
Not vista compatible - 03 Oct 2007

Major problem with this series of sat navs is that they are not vista compatible. Plug it into a vista pc or laptop and it will sit on a looped screen. I have written several times to Sony and they have confirmed it is not compatible but also have the cheek to say it is not their problem but microsofts and that no updated firmware is likely. This depsite the unit being launched after vista was on the scene. Their website is very misleading as it states all units are compatible or under investigation, seeing as how it is now October i have asked that they should correct this to show that it is not compatible. Other issue i have is that there is no indication of updates to safety camera information, so you get a years subscription which is not updated so will quickly be out of date, again their eventual reply to me was no indication of updates being issued. Shame really cos the unit looks the business but shows you should really stick to a dedicated sat nav maker like tom tom, sony have dipped their toe in the water put out flashy units but have no intention of supporting them. My advice, avoid and buy tomtom
A cracking piece of kit - 28 Sep 2007

The NVU-92T is an excellent piece of kit - accurate, fast and lots of features. The only bad bit is that you have to download the Safety Camera and TMC functions from the Sony website. Each country must then be entered individually as each has a different key. It would have been nice to have Bluetooth and MP3 connectivity like many other leading brands but Sony have traditionally been a conservative outfit so these are not available.
But as a navigation aid it is excellent and I speak from experience of using GPS since their inception.
The ViaMichelin X-980T satnav unit has more features and also needs lots of downloads but it has a massive database of POI's. However I could not find a Viamichelin unit as cheaply as the Sony unit.
I hope that this review helps.
