It's good when it works! - 23 Sep 2007

First unit worked well straight out of the box until it was connected to the computer to download the speed camera software. Not sure if it was this software, TomTom Home or it was just a faulty unit/ memory card but it did not want to work again afterwards. The big red cross of doom! I spent hours trying to phone TomTom customer service and don't bother trying to email them either! After spending a while on their website trying to "find a solution to my problem" as they recommend - I couldn't. Then spent ages trying to carefully write an email to explain all the errors and problems...clicked send..."your email needs a value" came the reply! What value? I included all the information they requested in all the areas provided. After trying at several different times of the day to call their customer service I gave up and returned the unit to Amazon for replacement. Fair play to Amazon as the replacement arrived next day! Again it works straight of the the box. The instructions are clear and the abaility to find the nearest hotel saved our bacon this weekend. No problems with the holder falling off the window screen and it's easy to remove when you want to....a little short maybe.

Do I try again to connect it to a computer and download speed cameras?????

Bought this after trying a mates Tom Tom GO and liked it, so thought I`d treat myself. Bought this one because of the larger widescreen display and very pleased with it. I must admit I didnt use the suppied CD but downloaded the software from the TOM TOM site with no problem. Backed up the SD card on to the PC and downloaded `important` updates again without a problem. A common problem a lot of people seem to have is the windscreen mount, I dont know if its just the car I have but when on the windscreen, the bottom of the unit rests on the top of the dash making it very secure and vibration free. Navigation has been (so far) perfect, it will even tell you which lane to get in to when aproching a junction plus an abundence of other info like the nearest petrol station, resturant, cash machine, police station etc etc even down to the nearest dentist, well, you never know. Overall an excellent bit of kit.

Good unit, cr*p mount. - 12 Sep 2007

For some reason, probably cost, tomtom have packaged the XL with a cheap windscreen mount. The mount is small and flimsy which means that the unit is constantly vibrating when you drive. It's also a complete nightmare to get off your windscreen. It's a shame as the old mount on the original ONE was big and solid.

I got around this by buying a new mount on eBay, but I really shouldn't have had to.

Otherwise, it's a good solid unit with easy to use software.

Excellent - 08 Sep 2007

Initially, I had problems with the Tom Tom Home software due to my inexperience. Eventually I had to resort to the Customer Support Team (twice) and they sorted me out promptly with expert advice. After that, I got the device installed in my car and it performed perfectly. In my opinion it is a brilliant piece of kit giving clear and precise directions and showing me where the dreaded speed traps were in plenty of time. I have no hesitation on recommending the Tom Tom One XL GB to anyone who, like me, used to habitually get lost.

Good Navigation - poor Points of Interest - 06 Sep 2007

I have found the navigaion excellent from the TomTom One XL Great Britain and Ireland. It pinpoints my position accurately, give clear directions and re-calculates if I go off its recommended route. The main failing is that the "millions of points of interest" mentioned above do not seem to be there. There are different POI headings but the POI section lists NO "places of worship", ONE cinema, and only ONE university, in Edinburgh (there are 3); NO law courts in Scotland and only ONE library in UK. The fact that there are apparently NO concert halls in Edinburgh may surprise those who attend the Edinburgh Festival each year. When I contacted customer services I was told that I could report these as "map data errors"; I could also input them myself (what all of them?) but not under the obvious categories, I would have to create my own. If you want good navigaion TomTom is fine - if you want to find Points of Interest don't assume they will be there. The "restraunts" are mainly burger bars.
